2019 has been a rather mixed year for the film industry. In terms of overall quality, it’s failed to live up to the high standards set by yesteryear. Nevertheless, like its counterpart 2018, there are still a plethora of brilliant films to sink your teeth into. Just don’t be expecting a flurry of honourable mentions.
But enough about the past let’s focus on the end of the Decade. The Marvel Cinematic Universe signed off on their third phase with the latest and potentially final Avengers film. A box-office giant, the new film by the Russo brothers finally knocked Avatar of its lofty perch, as the highest-grossing film of all time. It was another great year for horror with maestros Mike Flannigan and Ari Aster returning to the big screen. And we were even treated to a brand new Scorsese mob chronicle in the form of the Irishman. His longest film yet - and that’s a terrifying statement for a director as renowned for bladder hating films as Scorsese - clocking in at an eye-watering 209 minutes long.
