5 Easy Ways To Be More Eco-Friendly At Work

With sustainability at the forefront of most peoples’ minds, finding ways to be more eco-friendly in our day-to-day lives has never been as important as it is now. More and more of us are taking an active interest in doing our part to help the environment, and it doesn’t have to be a massive change from what we’re used to: doing a little can go a long way.

While we’re at work, it can be a little trickier to be as eco-conscious as we are in our own homes since we don’t have control over everything.

However, we’ve compiled a few easy tips to be more eco-friendly at work that you can personally carry out without deviating much from your daily routine.

1. Grab A Plant Pal For Your Desk

Bringing in a little plant pal for your desk will instantly add some colour to your office and will help improve the air quality through the oxygen it produces. Bringing plants into the work environment has also proven to improve concentration and productivity, pretty useful to have in the office.

A study from Harvard found that green-certified offices report a 26% boost in cognition and 30% fewer sickness related absences. What's more, respondents also reported a 6% rise in their sleep quality!

2. Bring Lunch To Work

You might not be able to do it every single day, but bringing lunch into work for even just a few days each week in a reusable container or lunchbox is a great way to cut down on packaging waste. Popping down to Sainsbury's for a meal deal can be tempting, but think about the waste!

If you only bring in what you know you’ll be able to eat, it will cut down on any food waste too (plus no more waiting in lunchtime lines).

3. Save energy with your computer

If you’re leaving your desk for a little bit, remember to lock the screen or turn off the monitor to save energy (or, of course, you can turn off the whole computer). You can also play around with your monitor’s energy-saving settings. For example, just by lowering its brightness is an easy way to save energy. And avoid using screensavers! These require the same amount of energy as when you’re using the computer so are best avoided.

4. Switch For The Sustainable

Wherever you can, try and choose the sustainable option. For instance, bringing a reusable bag to work, choosing the recycled option, or avoiding plastic is always better.

You can also choose to be more sustainable on the way to work. Walking or cycling when the weather’s nice, using public transport or commuting through a carpool are excellent eco-friendly alternatives if you can use them.

5. Cutting Down On Paper

Using digital documents and avoiding printing where you can is a great way to be more eco-friendly and sustainable. We know it can be difficult to avoid using paper entirely at work, so using recycled or sustainably-sourced paper is the best alternative option if you can’t avoid it.
